Community Garden at St. Paul’s in Gardner MA Now has 27 Beds

Originally established 2 years ago with a $3000 grant from the Diocese, the Community Garden located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Cross Street in Gardner almost doubled its capacity in 2023 and now has more than 2 dozen beds. Mayor Michael Nicholson posted on April 28th,”Big shout out to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Gardner MA for starting up their community gardens again this year to support the Gardner CAC! They are adding even more raised beds to bring the total to 27! Thanks for all you do for the City and it’s residents! “. Fresh produce grown on the property is distributed to area families by the CAC.

The sign states “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” – Matthew 25:35. Distribution of food grown will occur through the Food Pantry of the Community Action Committee. The CAC serves disadvantaged individuals in Gardner, Ashburnham, Baldwinville, Hubbardston, Otter River, Templeton, and Westminster. Gardner CAC website, CLICK HERE. According to the Church, “”Many faces, one faith. We are a diverse group of believers – bankers, musicians, social workers, teachers, public servants, business owners, parents  – united by our shared faith in a loving God.” Sunday services are at 10am

  • Harvard reportedly disciplines students who were involved in pro-Palestinian encampment
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 19, 2024 at 12:42 am

Some Harvard students who were involved in the pro-Palestinian encampment are reporting that they are now facing consequences from the school just days after they agreed to end their protest. Both student newspaper The Harvard Crimson and the Boston Globe reported Saturday that five undergraduate students were forced to withdraw from Harvard College and more than 20 students were placed on probation for their alleged involvement with the encampment at Harvard Yard. Additionally, at least 12 seniors are being prevented from graduating. The student protest group Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, which was the last in the Boston area to disband its encampment, shared a petition on social media on Saturday that is asking for signatures from undergraduate students to call on school leaders to let the impacted students graduate at Harvard’s commencement on Thursday. The Globe obtained a news release from the student coalition that reads, “We entered into our agreement with the Harvard administration with the understanding that Harvard would follow precedent in these disciplinary board procedures… Interim President [Alan] Garber’s email to our liaisons clearly states that he will allow students to graduate,. The decisions from [Friday] renege on that agreement.” According to the group, these punitive actions show “Harvard’s extraordinary commitment to the Palestine exception in matters of free speech, protest, and, now, discipline.” Harvard government professor Steve Levitsky told the Globe that the punishments are “highly disproportionate” compared with Harvard’s precedents for handling student demonstrations. “We should not be meting out this sort of punishment to students who have been students in good standing at Harvard throughout their time here and have completed all the requirements for graduation. This was a peaceful protest,” said Levitsky, who also told the Globe that it appears the disciplinary board for undergraduate students issued harsher consequences than peer boards at the university’s other schools. Protesters against the war between Israel and Hamas were voluntarily taking down their tents in Harvard Yard on Tuesday after university officials agreed to discuss their questions about the endowment, bringing a peaceful end to the kinds of demonstrations that were broken up by police on other campuses. NBC10 Boston has reached out to Harvard for comment but has not heard back yet. • Needham police seek video footage after car stolen, 6 others broken into
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 18, 2024 at 11:59 pm

Police in Needham, Massachusetts, issued a public safety alert on Saturday after at least six cars were broken into, with another vehicle stolen. Needham police say the break-ins happened overnight in town. The vehicle that was stolen has since been recovered, and another vehicle was found in Needham that had been stolen from a neighboring city. Police are asking anyone with video footage who may have seen people walking around their driveway to reach out to the public safety center at 781-444-1212. Residents are also reminded to lock their vehicles at night, bringing any valuables inside, and to always report any suspicious activity. According to police, most suspects are in and out of a vehicle in less than 15 seconds. “It is imperative that you call us right away if you see something,” the police department wrote in its Facebook post.

  • Child hit by vehicle outside Saugus mall
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 18, 2024 at 9:47 pm

A child was struck by a car in a mall parking lot in Saugus, Massachusetts, on Saturday night. The Saugus Fire Department responded to Square One Mall and tells NBC10 Boston that the child suffered minor injuries. The fire department also said the driver stayed on scene, referring further questions to Saugus police. There were several police cruisers in the parking lot, near the entrance to Macy’s. More details on what happened were not immediately available.

  • Manhole incident in Everett near Encore Boston Harbor, dozens without power
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 18, 2024 at 8:09 pm

There was a manhole incident near the Encore Boston Harbor casino in Everett, Massachusetts, that left dozens of nearby residents without power on Saturday evening. The Everett Fire Department responded and told NBC10 Boston that there were no injuries. National Grid was also on scene and confirms these were not explosions. Rather it was a failure of a secondary electrical line, which caused smoke. At least 47 customers were without power, the utility company said. Crews were making repairs and they expected to have power restored in the next few hours. Traffic was moving on Broadway, though one lane of the roadway was closed. Police officers were near the utility company’s trucks, and a number of onlookers were watching from the sidewalk.

  • Bicycle involved in crash in Wellesley, road closed
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 18, 2024 at 5:30 pm

A bicycle and a car were involved in a crash in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon. Information is extremely limited but Wellesley police confirm they are investigating the crash on Glen Road at Glenn Cross. Glen Road is closed to accommodate the on-scene investigation, police added. There was no immediate word on any possible injuries. • Editorial: Survey shows voters’ growing disconnect with pols’ priorities
by Editorial on May 19, 2024 at 4:34 am

Do these poll results align with your opinion of the present state of Massachusetts? Though based on a relatively small sample size, a well-designed survey, objectively based with no hidden agendas, can accurately record the pulse of a far larger group – in this case the state’s registered voters.
