  • Gas prices in Mass. jump 19 cents in the past week
by Alysha Palumbo on April 23, 2024 at 6:14 am

If you filled your gas tank recently, you may have experienced some sticker shock, as gas prices are soaring. According to AAA Northeast, gas in Massachusetts is up 19 cents a gallon over last week. Compared to one month ago, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is up 27 cents. AAA Northeast says the biggest factor in this double-digit price jump is the switchover to summer blend fuel last week – that’s why prices generally increase this time of year. They say winter blend is cheaper to produce, but summer blend tends to not vaporize as easily in the heat, so you get better gas mileage. With reduced demand between spring break and Memorial Day, those experts say gas prices should moderate soon. And despite international concerns, oil prices have been dropping, which should help keep gas prices from rising further as well. “International issues, tensions in the Middle East. Back in the day, we’d see oil prices shoot up almost overnight. That’s not happening these days,” said Mark Schieldrop, AAA Northeast spokesperson. “Part of that is the United States is now positioned as the world’s leading producer of oil and gasoline, so we have a lot of independence when it comes to effects around the world, when it comes to the global oil market.” To put this in perspective, last year at this time, gas prices were about 8 cents lower than they are now. • Another chilly start Tuesday followed by sunny and mild afternoon
by Pete Bouchard on April 23, 2024 at 5:26 am

Chilly starts are common in April, and Tuesday morning is no exception. Bit of frost to shake off in the suburbs, but this is quickly overcome by all the sun we’ll see. Keep in mind that the UV index is still high during the day, despite the cool high temperatures. Tuesday sees some recovery in that department as we leap to the mid-60s in some spots. Wednesday sees the only real threat for showers this week. A fast-moving front will glide in during the day, triggering a couple of morning showers, then a round in the mid-afternoon. Not much water out of these, so we’re not seeing a washout. Gusty winds will usher in the chill late day and into the evening however, so heads up on that. Flat-out chilly Thursday. There will be a breeze, but the temps struggle all day. What’s more is the setup for a frost in the morning and another possible Friday morning. With all this chill in the forecast, how are we aiming for 70s by late weekend? As we’ve seen many times before, the cold is transitory and fleeting. Come weekend, the pattern shifts and the winds turn to the southwest. Barring any sneaky backdoor cold fronts, we could pull this off. Right now, the warmup still seems fragile, so stay tuned.

  • Harvard suspends Palestinian advocacy group
by Staff and wire reports on April 22, 2024 at 11:51 pm

Harvard University’s leading Palestinian advocacy group says it has been suspended as protests over Israel’s war in Gaza rock college campuses. The Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee announced the suspension on social media Monday. A university spokesperson confirmed to The Boston Globe that Harvard College had suspended the group. The Harvard Crimson reported that it had obtained an email ordering the group to “cease all organizational activities” for the rest of the term or face possible expulsion. “You can suspend our organization and threaten our students. But you will never silence our calls for divestment from apartheid, occupation & genocide,” the group said in a statement on social media. “We call on the Harvard community to fight against repression and join the movement for Palestinian liberation. History is watching you.” The suspension comes as students at other schools, including MIT, Tufts University and Emerson College, demonstrate in solidarity with protesters at Columbia University. The Associated Press reported that a sign proclaimed Harvard Yard closed to the public Monday. It said structures, including tents and tables, were only allowed into the yard with prior permission. “Students violating these policies are subject to disciplinary action,” the sign said. Security guards were checking people for school IDs. The Palestine Solidarity Committee drew headlines in the aftermath of Hamas’ initial attack on Israel with a letter many criticized as justifying the terror group’s violence.

  • Climate change protesters block Moakley Bridge in South Boston
by Thea DiGiammerino on April 22, 2024 at 6:41 pm

Climate change protesters gathered in Boston for Earth Day, marching in an event that shut down traffic on the Moakley Bridge in South Boston Monday afternoon. Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion organized the event, which they called Boston’s Earth Day party. Earlier in the afternoon, the group had gathered at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. The same group took credit for a demonstration at Lawrence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford on Saturday. At that event, 20 people were arrested after they trespassed on the tarmac, according to Massachusetts State Police. Organizers said the intent was to stop planes from taking off. Extinction Rebellion is an international group focused on raising awareness about and demanding government action on climate change. Get updates on what’s happening in Boston to your inbox. • Will Messi come to Gillette Stadium?: What to know about the game between Inter Miami and the Revolution
by AP and Ana Mondello-Mata on April 22, 2024 at 4:44 pm

Inter Miami will face off against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, this Saturday and there is expected to be record fan attendance for a single Revolution game, according to the team. The game will be on Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the MLS season. Ticket prices range from $179 to almost $4,000. For those planning to attend, it is important that you know that the stadium only allows entry to the venue with one pre-approved bag per person, and the stadium does not handle cash, so all purchases are by card. Parking at the stadium is free for the match, and will be open from 3:30 p.m., with the gates opening at 5:30 p.m. The MBTA commuter rail announced it offer roundtrip service for this home game against Inter Miami CF on Saturday, April 27, limited to availability. The Revolution is expected to set a new single-game attendance record in a sold-out game. Roundtrip tickets went on sale for $10 last Wednesday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. m. only in the mTicket application. For more information about public transportation schedules, go here. Soccer fans in the New England area have high expectations about whether they will have the opportunity to see Lionel Messi in action. So far it has not been published whether or not the soccer star will visit the Gillette Stadium with his team, in the company of Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets. Jordi Alba missed the game against Nashville last Saturday. At the moment, Inter Miami has not published the official squad for the match. The New England Revolution has had a tough season, and remains in last place in the Eastern Conference with 4 points in total. Late last year the team announced Caleb Porter as head coach of the New England Revolution in an attempt to renew the team’s leadership. The Revs hosted Miami just before Messi signed with the club last June. How has Messi performed with Miami? Lionel Messi, who debuted less than a year ago with Inter Miami, shined on Saturday with a double to increase the goal tally with which he leads the MLS this campaign to seven, and Inter Miami won 3-1 on Saturday against Nashville. The Argentine star, who also contributed an assist, scored a pair of goals in the same game in this league for the second time. He had achieved it on March 2, against Orlando. Messi has a goal or an assist in each of the six league games he has played. He has missed four due to injury. Even with the defeat they experienced in Mexico where they were eliminated from the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Miami is undefeated in five duels against Nashville since Messi’s arrival. They lead the Eastern Conference with 18 points, two more than the New York Red Bulls, who later tied 2-2 with Los Angeles FC. The Associated Press contributed to this report. MLS Apr 20 Lionel Messi logs brace, assist in Miami's 3-1 win vs. Nashville Inter Miami Apr 11 Inter Miami routed by Monterrey 3-1 in Champions Cup quarterfinal Leg 2
