  • Ex-Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura says he will sell cannabis edibles
by Associated Press on March 28, 2024 at 5:00 pm

Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura has announced he is entering the cannabis market as a seller. But the state is still figuring out retail sales of the drug after legalizing marijuana for adults last year. Minnesota Public Radio reported that former Ventura is launching his own brand of cannabis edibles in partnership with Retro Bakery, which is based in suburban Minneapolis and producing hemp-derived THC edibles under the Jesse Ventura Farms brand. Ventura is a former professional wrestler and actor. He shocked the public when he won the race for Minnesota governor as an independent candidate in 1998. He served as governor from 1999 to 2003.

  • Biden administration restores threatened species protections dropped by Trump
by Associated Press on March 28, 2024 at 4:11 pm

The Biden administration has restored rules to protect imperiled plants and animals that had been rolled back back under former President Donald Trump. Among the changes announced Thursday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will reinstate a decades-old regulation that mandates blanket protections for species newly classified as threatened. The blanket protections regulation was dropped in 2019 as part of a suite of changes to the application of the species law under Trump. Those changes came as extinctions accelerate globally due to habitat loss and other pressures. Energy companies, ranchers, farmers and many Republicans have long viewed the 1973 law as an impediment to development.

  • Rain continues Thursday ahead of a warmer, drier Easter weekend
by Tevin Wooten on March 28, 2024 at 12:16 pm

We’re back underneath downpours for the day, as a stalling weather system hangs around. So far, most of the rain has been lighter through the early morning hours, but we’ll expect downpours to become greater by the early afternoon. The rainfall rates aren’t too steep, so while there will be puddles on the road, widespread flooding isn’t expected to occur. Most of the water level rise will put rivers and streams into minor flood stage. The flip side of the coin is that the day isn’t too chilly. High temperatures sit in the upper 40s to 50s. By the day’s end, lows aren’t too drastic either, at roughly 40° overnight. Friday morning brings a little improvement from the rain, with lingering showers through mid-morning. The sun will break out across western Massachusetts, and a decent sunset is anticipated Friday through central Massachusetts and Boston. The day is windy, with gusts from the northwest at nearly 30 miles per hour. Easter weekend, unlike most this month, is actually drying out. Nothing but sun is expected for Saturday with temperatures in the mid-50s. There will be passing clouds and a sprinkle possible for the south coast on Sunday, otherwise it’s a warm and dry day. The next impactful storm seems to be on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. While the storm is still forming, we’re anticipating another wallop of wet weather, with snow mixed in through lower Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and northern New England. Any wintery weather would be with elevation (around 1000′ or higher). Otherwise, early calls for rain seem to be near 2 to 3 inches for rain totals around Boston and Essex County, though isolated pockets of 3 to 4 inches appear through Downeast Maine.

  • Smoking materials likely caused deadly Newton, Lowell house fires
    on March 28, 2024 at 12:08 pm

Two recent deadly fires in Massachusetts, one in Newton and one in Lowell, were likely caused by smoking materials, fire officials said Thursday, identifying the men who died in both incidents. The fire on Walnut Street in Newton on Sunday left 69-year-old Scott Patz dead and one other person with minor injuries, officials said. Smoking materials were found to have started that fire, near a couch in the living room. A 56-year-old man, Charles Bearden, died in the fire on Farmland Road in Lowell on March 16, state and local officials said in a news release. Another person was hurt in the fire but is expected to survive. That blaze began near a bed and was likely caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials. Smoking materials that aren’t safely disposed are the No. 1 cause of fatal fires, the officials said, and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine noted in a news release that everyone should have working smoke alarms in all levels of their home. “A house fire can become deadly in less than three minutes. Smoke alarms can give you the warning you need to get out quickly, especially when you’re sleeping,” he said. Test them every month to be sure your family is protected, and practice an escape route so you know where to go when you hear them activate. No property is worth your life – get out and stay out when you hear the smoke alarm sounding.” More on the deadly fires Newton Mar 24 Man dies in Newton house fire; cause still under investigation lowell Mar 17 Man dead, one injured in Lowell house fire

  • NCAA Sweet 16 tipping off at TD Garden Thursday night
by Munashe Kwangwari on March 28, 2024 at 11:10 am

Though your bracket may be busted, the March Madness excitement is only getting more intense, especially Thursday in Boston. Four of the teams in the Sweet 16 are set to play Thursday night at the TD Garden — and one of those teams is from New England. UConn will go head-to-head with San Diego State University, a rematch of last year’s national championship game. Followed by the University of Illinois against Iowa State University. The three days of games from Thursday to Saturday are expected to generate as much as $17 million in economic impact, with spending on things like hotels and restaurants, according to Meet Boston, formerly the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. Plus, Boston will be featured on TVs in living rooms around the country during the games. “We find that people love the experience here,” said Martha Sheridan, president and CEO of Meet Boston. “It’s a very accessible city, it’s easy to get around and it’s just very welcoming. We have the right type of venues for people to experience when they come here.” UConn is the number one seed and less than a two-hour drive from North Station, making them a favorite beyond that top seed. “I think you’re gonna get a lot of people from Connecticut up here for the games,” said Damon Cerrone, who’s going to the games. “I’m super excited to play in Boston,” said Alex Karaban, a Southborough resident who plays for UConn. “I think it’s probably the only chance I get to play with UConn in Boston, so definitely [it’ll] be special.” Karaban native will play in the first game that tips off at 7:40 p.m. Thursday. • Driver charged in crash involving school bus in Barre, Mass.
    on March 28, 2024 at 10:59 am

A driver, who crashed into a loaded school bus in Barre, Massachusetts, on Thursday morning, is facing several charges, police said. No one was seriously hurt in the crash on West Street, but one student was taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to Barre police. Images from the scene showed the school bus had crashed into a tree and a white SUV with major damage on its driver’s side. The 32-year-old driver, Cedric Cooley, of Orange, was placed into custody on charges of driving on a suspended license, negligent operation, speeding and reckless endangerment of a child. He was due to appear in East Brookfield District Court. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to the charges. The crash was reported about 7:15 a.m., police said. Conley’s vehicle crossed the centerline of West Street, which is also Route 122, and hit the bus, sending it into the road’s guardrail and trees. It wasn’t immediately clear if school officials had released a statement on the crash. This story uses functionality that may not work in our app. Click here to open the story in your web browser.

  • Russian veto brings end to UN panel monitoring enforcement of North Korea nuclear sanctions
by Associated Press on March 28, 2024 at 2:45 pm

Russia has vetoed a U.N. resolution in a move that effectively abolishes the monitoring by United Nations experts of U.N. sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear program, though the sanctions themselves remain in place. Russia’s vote on Thursday prompted Western accusations that Moscow was acting to shield its weapons purchases from North Korea for use in its war against Ukraine, in violation of sanctions. The Security Council resolution sponsored by the United States would have extended the mandate of the panel for a year, but Russia’s veto will halt its operations. Russia's U.N. ambassador says Western nations are trying to “strangle” North Korea and sanctions have proven “irrelevant” and “detached from reality” in reining in its nuclear program.
