  • Student protests divide college campuses as violence in Gaza persists
by Oscar Margain on April 23, 2024 at 8:41 pm

Dozens of students at MIT, Tufts, and Emerson College have set up camp in solidarity with Columbia University students who were forcibly removed from their encampments last week. “We have four demands,” said Emerson College Sophomore Amrita Bala. “It’s to disclose their divestments cut ties and divest from Israel, drop all attacks on student organizers, and speak out for an immediate and permanent cease-fire and an end to the occupation of Palestine.” At Harvard, the student-led Palestine Solidarity Committee was suspended Monday and the Harvard Yard remained closed Tuesday. Harvard University has not responded to NBC10 Boston’s request for an explanation for these decisions. Columbia alum Robert Kraft said he has stopped giving money to Columbia University until it ensures the safety of Jewish students. In 2019, Kraft created the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism in a response to what Kraft saw as a rise in Jewish hate in the U.S. “You can protest, you can disagree, but what you can’t do is threaten somebody,” said FCAS President Tara Levine. Levine noted that Jewish hate on college campuses has spiked since the start of the Hamas-Israel war in October. “Those protests have moved from disagreeing on a topic to being threatening and anti-Semitic. And the result of that is that Jewish students feel unsafe on the campuses that they’re studying. And for us, that’s unacceptable,” she said. Administrators at Tufts, Emerson College and MIT said they continue to monitor the student encampments and have not decided to remove them. • Cape Cod woman's death sparks battle over whether her horse should live
by Mary Markos on April 23, 2024 at 8:40 pm

Efforts are underway in a Cape Cod town to save a horse whose owner died after expressing she had wanted the animal buried with her. Barbara Collins of Sandwich, Massachusetts, had a dying wish to be buried with her beloved horse, Brady — named after longtime Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. After Collins’ death from stomach cancer, that wish is causing controversy. “She was thinking in the best interest of the horse,” said Kathy Booth-frasier, manager of Crescent Moon Farm in Sandwich. Booth-frasier says Brady is almost 20 years old, has a stifle injury and hasn’t been ridden in years. Collins didn’t want him passed from owner to owner, since someone could tire of caring for him. “A horse isn’t a dog,” Booth-frasier said. “They’re more money, more responsibility, and they’re 700-pound animals. They can hurt you.” “You gotta do right by the horse,” she added. “Sometimes you have to leave your heart at the door.” Allie Hammond, the horse’s former owner, is upset at the notion of euthanizing the animal. “I don’t want to see him lose his life,” she said. “And I don’t think Barbara would, either.” Hammond has Brady’s sister, Saphy, at her farm in Rode Island. She rescued them both when they were yearlings. “He is such an amazing horse, and giving him up was really hard for me,” she said. When she heard Brady was going to be euthanized, she reached out to State Rep. Steven Xiarhos, a Republican on Cape Cod. “We’re trying to save Brady,” Xiarhos said. “I think we can find someone, somewhere, that will, in a way, honor Barbara, and resolve this situation in a positive way.” Brady is paid for at the farm through May 1. His fate from there remains to be seen. “We don’t have the funds, unless someone wants to donate,” Booth-frasier said. “If someone can give him a home and a life that he deserves, all for it, but it’s got to be a commitment, and it’s got to be a written, legal-binding commitment.”

  • Mass. murder suspect arrested at Albany International Airport
by Thea DiGiammerino on April 23, 2024 at 7:34 pm

A man from western Massachusetts was arrested in New York state Tuesday on a murder charge after police responding to a call for a bad odor found a body inside the man’s apartment, authorities said. The investigation began when someone reported a foul odor coming from an apartment on Chapman Street in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Inside, police found a dead man. Investigators believe the death is a homicide, though the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine official cause and manner of death. The man was not publicly identified. The former tenant, Taaniel Herberger-Brown, 42, was arrested at Albany International Airport, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. He has been charged with murder. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney. No other details were immediately available. Get updates on what’s happening in New England to your inbox. • Serious crash on Mass. Pike in Brighton backs up highway
by Asher Klein on April 23, 2024 at 4:52 pm

A serious crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Boston Tuesday afternoon was causing heavy traffic toward the city. • 3 people, including 15-year-old driver, charged in police chase that ended in crash on I-290
by Thea DiGiammerino and Staff Reports on April 23, 2024 at 3:55 pm

A 15-year-old driving a stolen car and his two adult passengers are facing charges after leading police on a chase on multiple Massachusetts highways Monday before crashing the car off Interstate 290 in Northborough, according to police. The driver, who was not identified due to his age, was released to his mother after the incident and was due for arraignment in Worcester Juvenile Court, according to Massachusetts State Police. He faces charges of failure to stop for police, speeding, leaving the scene of property damage, receiving a stolen vehicle and other related counts. A 20-year-old passenger was also arraigned Tuesday, charged with receiving a stolen vehicle. Police said he initially gave his name as Ibrahim Hasbun, but they later determined his real name was Kyen Perez. He was held on a $1,000 cash bail and is next scheduled to appear in court on May 23. Perez will also be charged with providing a false name to police, state police said. A second passenger, identified as a 20-year-old woman, was summonsed to court for receiving a stolen motor vehicle. This was all the culmination of a police pursuit that began in the MetroWest area Monday. A state police helicopter tracked the vehicle on Route 9, Interstate 495, Route 70 and I-290, troopers said. Eventually police deployed stop sticks, a tire-deflation device, officials said, and the car crashed.
