Community Garden at St. Paul’s in Gardner MA Now has 27 Beds

Originally established 2 years ago with a $3000 grant from the Diocese, the Community Garden located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Cross Street in Gardner almost doubled its capacity in 2023 and now has more than 2 dozen beds. Mayor Michael Nicholson posted on April 28th,”Big shout out to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Gardner MA for starting up their community gardens again this year to support the Gardner CAC! They are adding even more raised beds to bring the total to 27! Thanks for all you do for the City and it’s residents! “. Fresh produce grown on the property is distributed to area families by the CAC.

The sign states “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” – Matthew 25:35. Distribution of food grown will occur through the Food Pantry of the Community Action Committee. The CAC serves disadvantaged individuals in Gardner, Ashburnham, Baldwinville, Hubbardston, Otter River, Templeton, and Westminster. Gardner CAC website, CLICK HERE. According to the Church, “”Many faces, one faith. We are a diverse group of believers – bankers, musicians, social workers, teachers, public servants, business owners, parents  – united by our shared faith in a loving God.” Sunday services are at 10am

  • Rec center in Roxbury that served as temporary migrant shelter to reopen
by Staff Reports on May 20, 2024 at 9:16 am

Migrant families staying in the overflow shelter at the Melnea A. Cass Recreation Center in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood have been moved, Gov. Maura Healey said. The families, Healey said, have been relocated to either a more stable housing option outside of the shelter system or to a different safety-net site. “We are working closely with school districts and families to ensure continuity of education,” said the Healey administration. “Per federal law, families will have the choice between staying in their current district or enrolling in their new district.” The recreation center, which belongs to the state, was converted into a temporary shelter for families who have been sleeping at Boston Logan International Airport. The state planned to use the recreation complex in Roxbury until May 31. The center will resume its activities for the community in June. • Wareham police officer injured in crash, other driver charged with OUI
by Marc Fortier on May 20, 2024 at 8:50 am

A police officer and one other person were injured in a crash on Sunday night in Wareham, Massachusetts. Wareham police said one of their officers was out on a motor vehicle stop on Cranberry Highway around 9 p.m. Sunday when the officer’s cruiser was struck from behind. The officer was seated in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Another Wareham officer was on location and saw the vehicle rear-end the cruiser, which was marked and had its emergency lights activated. Wareham emergency medical services and Onset fire provided medical attention to the officer and the driver of the vehicle that struck the cruiser. Both the driver, 24-year-old Cameron McPhee, of Plymouth, and the officer, whose name was not released, were taken by ambulance to Tobey Hospital. No updates were provided on the extent of their injuries. McPhee was later charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle and possession of an open container of alcohol. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court. • Healey's goal in 2nd period gives Boston 4-3 win in first game of professional women's hockey championship series
    on May 20, 2024 at 8:24 am

Jess Healey scored from the point late in the second period to lift Boston to a 4-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday night in the first game of the inaugural Walter Cup, the championship of the Professional Women’s Hockey League Championship. The best-of-five series continues Tuesday. Game 1 drew 4,508 fans. Healey, a defenseman who had one goal during the regular season, got her first playoff goal just 15 seconds after Minnesota’s Taylor Heise scored her second goal, tying it 3-3 with 2:50 left in the second period. Boston goalie Aerin Frankel survived two power plays, 1 minute and 35 seconds of Minnesota pulling goalie Maddie Rooney for an extra attacker. and 13 shots in the third period. Frankel finished with 30 saves and Minnesota came up empty on the only three power plays of the game. Healy got the puck at the left point and she sent a high wrist shot through traffic over Rooney’s glove into the far, top corner. “We’re just absolutely relentless,” Haley said. “This whole playoff stretch we’ve really shown that, we never gave up. We had a good response every time they got a goal.” It was the fourth straight playoff win by one goal for third-seeded Boston, which swept second-seeded Montreal 3-0 with all three games decided in overtime. Minnesota went on the power play just 10 seconds into the game and although that didn’t produce a goal, it set a tone for pressure that resulted in Michela Cava’s goal less than five minutes in. Susanna Tapani, who had two of the overtime winners in the semifinals, scored the equalizer for Boston 2 1/2 minutes later. That set the stage for a wild second period that featured five goals. After Taylor Heise scored for Minnesota at 8:04, Taylor Wenczkowski and Hannah Brandt connected 2:21 apart and Boston led 3-2 with 4:49 remaining in the period. Heise tied it again about 2 minutes later but that just set the stage for Healey. Rooney had 18 saves for Minnesota. Both teams finished with 35 points in the regular season and didn’t secure a playoff berth until the closing days. Boston beat Minnesota three times in five games and had the tiebreaker for the third seed. Minnesota won three-straight to beat league champion Toronto 3-2 in the semifinals. • Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, supreme leader’s protege, dies at 63 in helicopter crash
by Associated Press on May 20, 2024 at 4:43 am

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died. He was a hard-line protege of the country’s supreme leader who helped oversee the mass executions of thousands in 1988 and later led the country as it enriched uranium near weapons-grade levels, launched a major attack on Israel and experienced mass protests. He was 63. Raisi died Sunday along with the foreign minister and other officials in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. His death comes as Iran struggles with internal dissent and its relations with the wider world. Raisi lost a presidential election to the relatively moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani in 2017. He came to power four years later in a vote carefully managed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to clear any major opposition candidate.
