  • What is the COVID FLiRT variant, and could it cause a summer spike?
by Darren Botelho on May 20, 2024 at 1:43 pm

Health officials are issuing a warning about an increase in COVID activity with a new variant called KP.2. Local doctors say the new strain, also known as the FLiRT variant, shouldn’t alarm you. But it does have them watching for a possible summer spike in cases because of its transmissability and abiity to evade prior immunity. “There’s a bunch of variants out there right now,” said Dr. Jonathan Bayuk, of Allergy & Immunology Associates of New England. Experts say FLiRT is actually a family of variants from the faster-spreading Omicron family, including the now dominant KP.2 variant and KP.1.1. KP.2 now accounts for over 28% of COVID cases in the U.S., and KP.1.1 another 7%, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nickname “FLiRT” was first used in March by T. Ryan Gregory, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Guelph in Ontario who is behind many of the other variant nicknames. The name is drawn from the letters in the names of their mutations. What are the symptoms of KP.2? The symptoms are similar to those associated with other variants, including fever or chills, cough, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, headache, muscle aches, difficulty breathing, fatigue, loss of tast or smell, brain fog and stomach upset. “Now the concern is that this KP.2, again part of the FLiRT family of variants, could cause another summer wave. None of them are more deadly. They just change,” Bayuk said. As of this month, cases and hospitalizations are still relatively low in New England. Here in Massachusetts, in the first full week of May, the state Department of Health reported about 700 cases of COVID-19, compared with nearly 6,900 five months ago. “As we get further away from the previous strains, the vaccination and natural immunity that we have, it becomes more difficult to fight off,” Bayuk said, “and more people can get sick again, even though they may have been sick before or vaccinated.” “It’s been very quiet for a while, and we don’t really know if the KP.2 variant will be covered by the previous vaccine that we had last fall,” he added. “And the further we get away from vaccination, your immunity will wane. Some people will keep it for a lot longer than others, but you just don’t know.” The bottom line, medical experts say, is if you haven’t been vaccinated in a long time, are immuno-compromised, are over 65 years old or have other health conditions, you should get vaccinated. “The best thing that you can do is get vaccinated,” Bayuk said. “The goal of vaccination is to prevent hospitalizations and deaths, not to prevent you from getting sick.” More COVID-19 news news May 8 AstraZeneca to withdraw Covid vaccine worldwide, citing a drop in demand Feb 28 Older US adults should get another COVID-19 shot, advisers say

  • GBH general manager leaving after 4 years
by Don Seiffert on May 20, 2024 at 1:26 pm

Pam Johnson, who was named general manager of GBH News in 2020, is leaving the organization, she told staff in an email Monday. “I won’t bury the lede. I have decided the time is right for me to step aside to make room for a new leader to guide the next chapter at GBH News,” Johnston said in a memo on Monday morning. Johnston listed several gains at the nonprofit public media organization from the past few years, including being “more cohesive (and) audience-focused” and that it is “reaching and engaging large and diverse audiences through content produced by a diverse group of journalists across all platforms every day.” More on this story from Boston Business Journal

  • Boating season: Here are some tips to stay safe on the water
by Pamela Gardner on May 20, 2024 at 1:25 pm

Hot temperatures are in the forecast all over New England and you may be itching to get out on the water. It’s time as boating season has arrived, but there are some precautions to take as our water temperatures remain cold this early in the season.  And this week also happens to be National Safe Boating Week. Here are some things to keep in mind as we enjoy mother nature in a safe way. Our ocean water temperatures are running in the 49 to 54 degree range off our coast of New England. And some lakes up north are in the low 40s. Even though ocean water temps are a bit above normal for this time of the year, it’s dangerous to us if we end up unexpectedly in the water.  So, this time of the year, we have to dress for the water temps, not the air temps. A wet or dry suit can add those layers for you. And always wear a life jacket if you’re boating or just even on the paddle board.  And many tips for cold water safety overlap for boating, too. Also, watch for the marine forecast for your day or days ahead. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service issues watches, warnings and even small craft advisories due to the wind and waves. A lot of times in the summer the water will be calm in the morning, but as the sun mixes, the atmosphere and the wind pick up our waves, it can get quite choppy. And stay weather aware. If there is a pop-up storm, a sudden strong gust of wind can capsize a vessel or leave you stranded. Lightning is always a danger in storms, but being exposed on the water and on a metal vessel amplifies your risk way more.  Safety is key as we head out on the water but enjoy! I’ll certainly be out there as often as possible when the weather cooperates. Happy boating!
